Fall in Thomas County
Autumn in Thomas Co. finds the hills a vast treasure of gold – as the grasses, animals and man prepare for the unknown winter weather ahead.
The grasses not put up for hay, becomes golden brown in the autumn sun. You will find all animals, especially the thousands head of cows now without their calves gorging themselves on the fodder of the hills, gaining body fat that will help insulate them against the bitter cold and winds of winter.
Ranchers have stockpiled their cattle’s feed supply of hay bales mass produced earlier in the summer. If they have not sold the calves from the cows, they become like hawks and scour the calf herd daily for any signs of sickness that will lower their profit margin. Every day, feeding must be done. A trip to town is for necessary items and occurs only after the feeding is done. A week-end away is accomplished only if there is another hand to do the work.
Ranchers and businesses, as well as the Nebraska National Forest near Halsey, welcome the multitude of hunters that come to Thomas Co. perusing grouse, turkeys, pheasant and deer.
So come, stay, and soak in the sights and sounds that are autumn in Thomas Co.
